The New York cityscape was one of most common subjects of Samuel H. Gottscho (American, 1875-1971). His 1933 photograph, Financial District, From the Hotel Bossert, reproduced for our poster from an original gelatin silver print in The Met collection, is particularly masterful. It shows a panoramic view of downtown New York, dramatically lighted, with the low waterfront buildings of Brooklyn in the foreground and the great towers of Manhattan rising in the background.
