Royal Elephant Figure from The Met Museum

$300.00

Add a touch of royalty to your decor. Our beautiful reproduction evokes an exquisite 19th-century elephant in The Met collection. The original silver-plated sculpture was owned by a ruler of the Fon kingdom of Dahomey in the present-day Republic of Benin, in West Africa. Evoking strength, royal legacy, and enduring memory, The Met’s elephant was associated with the Dahomey ruler King Guezo (ruled 1818-58) and his son Glele (ruled 1858-89). During annual festivities, it was paraded through the capital to honor the kingdom’s wealth and military might. It is an exceptional example of Fon sculpture in the royal medium of silver.
